Is It Actually in the Bible?
Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.
"The way of the Lord is not equal" means God doesn't treat everyone in exactly the same, identical way
"Equal" meant fair or just, not "the same in every case."
Ezekiel 18:25, in every translation this tool compares.
Ezekiel 18:25 has the people complaining, "The way of the Lord is not equal," to which God responds, "Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?" This is a debate about fairness and justice in how God judges people based on their own choices, not a debate about mathematical sameness. "Equal," from Latin "aequalis," carried this moral sense of "just, right" alongside its quantitative sense.
Modern English has let the quantitative sense ("equal amounts," "equal parts") crowd out the older qualitative one, so readers picture a complaint about inconsistency rather than what's actually being argued: whether God's justice is fair.
