What is actually going on

John 20:24-25 gives Thomas the most vivid individual doubt scene in the Gospels (he wants to touch the wounds himself before he'll believe), and that specificity is exactly why his name became shorthand for skepticism. But he's not singled out as uniquely doubting in the wider resurrection narrative.

Luke reports that when the women brought the first report of the empty tomb, "these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them" (Luke 24:11): the whole group, not one man. Matthew goes further, describing the moment of the risen Jesus's own commissioning appearance in Galilee: "when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted" (Matthew 28:17), doubt present in the very scene where Jesus gives the Great Commission. Thomas gets the name attached to the pattern because his story is the one told in the most personal, closeup detail, not because he was the only one who struggled to believe.
