Is It Actually in the Bible?

Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.

"Whither have ye made a road to day?": sounds like David was asked which highway or street he'd built

In the KJV, a "road" was a military raid or incursion, not a paved route for travel.

What is actually going on

In 1 Samuel 27:10, the Philistine king Achish asks David, "Whither have ye made a road to day?" and David answers with the territory he'd attacked: "against the south of Judah… the Jerahmeelites… the Kenites." Modern translations render this plainly as "raid." "Road" comes from the same root as "ride" and originally meant a mounted expedition or foray, especially a hostile one, before it settled into meaning the path itself.

A reader today pictures asphalt and construction; the actual exchange is a warlord casually asking a mercenary captain who he'd just plundered.
