Is It Actually in the Bible?
Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.
"Ye did communicate with my affliction" means the Philippians talked to Paul about his suffering
"Communicate" meant to share or give materially, not to exchange words.
Philippians 4:14, in every translation this tool compares.
Philippians 4:14 says, "ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction." Paul is thanking the Philippians for the practical, material support (money and supplies) they sent him during his hardship, not for a conversation. "Communicate" comes from Latin "communicare," to make common or share, the same root behind "community" and "common."
Modern English narrowed "communicate" almost entirely to the exchange of information or messages, so a reader today pictures letters or check-ins rather than what actually happened: the Philippian church sharing their resources to bear Paul's burden with him.
