This Privacy Policy explains what information jayms.com collects, why it's collected, and what you can do about it. The short version: this is a personal teaching site, not a business, and it collects only what's needed to run the site and let you hear from it if you choose to.
Who we are
Our website address is https://jayms.com. If you have any questions about this policy or the data we hold, you can reach us at james@jayms.com.
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comment form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string, which help with spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (a hash) may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. The Gravatar privacy policy is at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside your comment.
Email list
If you sign up for email updates, your email address is stored and managed through Mailchimp, a third-party service, so we can send you new posts and occasional updates. We don’t sell or share your address, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email. Mailchimp’s privacy policy is at https://www.intuit.com/privacy/statement/.
Analytics
We use basic site analytics to understand which posts are read and roughly where visitors come from. This data is aggregated and is used only to improve the site, not to identify you personally.
Media
If you upload images to the site, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS), since visitors can download images and extract that data.
Cookies
If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies, so you don’t have to re-enter them next time. These cookies last one year. Login and editing cookies are set only for logged-in users (site administrators) and contain no data needed by ordinary visitors.
Embedded content from other websites
Posts may include embedded content such as videos or images from other sites. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited that other site directly, and those sites may collect data, set cookies, and track your interaction with their content.
How long we keep your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are kept indefinitely so follow-up comments can be recognized and approved automatically. Email subscribers’ addresses are kept until you unsubscribe.
Your rights over your data
If you’ve left comments or joined the email list, you can request an exported copy of the personal data we hold about you, and you can ask us to erase it. Email james@jayms.com to make a request. This doesn’t include data we’re required to keep for legal or security reasons.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Email addresses are processed by Mailchimp as described above.
