An open, weathered codex on a dusty wooden table in a stone cellar, with an old cart wheel behind it lit by a pale glow through its spokes.

Bible Study App Updates

This page keeps track of the Bible Study App. It says what is on jayms.com now, what is only in the test copy, and what is waiting in the queue. It is not linked from any menu.

Where things are

  • On jayms.com: the app at jayms.com/bible-study-app. This is the version everyone uses. The user guide describes this version and nothing else.
  • In the test copy: new features are tried here first, with their own saved data, so the live app is never touched. Anything listed under the test copy below is not on jayms.com yet. The test copy is being set up at jayms.com/bible-study-app-TEST and is not open yet.
  • In the queue: planned work that has not been built.

On jayms.com now

Everything in this section is live. The date is the day it went on the site. Changes before 22 October are covered in the user guide.

30 October

  • The Config button, now on the live app: on the side buttons, it opens a panel where you set things your way. Authors, Commentaries and Study Bibles put the Logos shelf in your own order and hide what you do not want. Plans puts the reading plans in your order, hides the ones you do not use, and restarts any one from its own row. Buttons chooses which side buttons show. Reset puts the order back and does not touch your progress. Your choices stay in your own browser.
  • Links from the app back to jayms.com now carry tracking tags, so the site’s own stats can see which part of the app sent each visit. Nothing changes on screen.
  • Reading plans follow what you have done, not the calendar. Where you are is the first day not yet done, marked Up next, so you can read none for a week or six days in a row and the plan waits. The list shows the two days before it and the six after, and Show all opens the whole plan from day 1. The Done-from-day-1 block at the bottom of the list is gone.
  • A roomier header: Go to a passage and Find now sit on the book and verse line, at the right of the title, so nothing covers anything at a narrow window. Below about 1250 pixels Find folds to a search button (Ctrl or Cmd+F still opens it). Settings, About, Donate and Help sit at the right edge of the top bar.
  • FC, the full chapter button: it opens the chapter in a tab of its own beside the verses you were on, so you can click between the two. In the chapter, the verses you came from are marked and the page scrolls to them.
  • With only part of a chapter on screen, the « and » buttons sit either side of FC and step to the verses before and after, the same number of them. They carry on across a chapter break. With whole chapters on screen they step chapters, as before.
  • Luke with N. T. Wright: a new reading plan. It takes 89 days, one short section of Luke a day, in the 89 sections N. T. Wright uses in Luke for Everyone. The Shelf lists his book beside each passage.

29 October

  • Romans with N. T. Wright: a new reading plan. It takes 65 days, one short section of Romans a day, in the 65 sections N. T. Wright uses in Romans for Everyone. The Shelf lists his book beside each passage.
  • Restart this plan: a button under the plan’s progress bar clears that plan’s Done ticks and starts it again from day 1, today. It asks first, and your other plans are not touched.
  • The plan list now shows the two days before the day you are on, so yesterday is in view.

27 October

  • Jayms Notes: a side button that shows the notes written for the passage you are reading, with a search box that finds a passage or a word in any of them.
  • Done: every reading has a Done button. It ticks the day in the plan and is kept in your own browser.
  • Read aloud: paste your own Speechify key in Settings and the Voice and Read buttons appear. The key stays in your browser. Speed shows as 1x, 1.1x, 1.5x or 2x, and the voice and speed can be set in Settings as well as under the text.
  • Settings is grouped under Reading, Colours in the text, Logos, Interleaved Bible (on phones) and Read aloud, with a plain line under each option saying what it does.
  • Fact Book maps: when a map picture does not load, the app tries a second source and then shows a link to open the map.
  • Phones: the Bible picker stays open from book to chapter to verse, and the reading plan closes with a Close bar at the top or a tap outside it.
  • Phones: an app saved to the Home Screen no longer slides under the clock.

24 October

  • Interleaved Bible: English, Hebrew or Greek, and Lemma can each be switched on or off. On a computer they are buttons in the panel; on a phone they are checkboxes in Settings.
  • Back button: when one panel opens another, such as Maps from the Fact Book, a button at the top names the first panel and takes you back to it.

23 October

  • Phones: the top bar became a round menu button holding the reading plan, The Bible, the three apps, Settings and Help. Text size moved into that menu, and so did Add to Home Screen.
  • Phones: reading tabs use short book names, such as Psa 1 and Lam 2.
  • The reader buttons say what they switch to: Verses or Reading, Parallel or Single. Highlight works on phones, and one tap selects the text and copies it. FC opens the full chapter when only part of it is showing.
  • Interleaved Bible: Lemma under each word, and the how-to strip shows once and then folds away.
  • Glossary entries show in full, and links to jayms.com entries say which entry they open.

22 October

  • The reading plan can be turned off in Settings. The Bible picker then stays open and passages open as tabs you can close.
  • Words of Jesus in red, from the World English Bible, as a Settings option.
  • Cross-refs has an Echoes of Revelation tab, with the Revelation verse and the Old Testament passage side by side.

In the test copy, not on jayms.com yet

These work in the test copy. They move to the live app after they have been tried, and the user guide is updated at that point, not before.

  • Save to a folder on your own computer. Notes, settings and Done ticks are written to a folder you choose, so clearing the browser does not lose them. A short set-up walks through it, including how to use the same folder on a second computer with iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Obsidian Sync. The folder is yours: nothing is uploaded and the site cannot see it. This works in Chrome and Edge on a computer. Other browsers and phones get Back up now and Restore from a backup, which is one file you keep yourself.
  • Your own notes under the text, saved to that folder as Markdown files that open in any text app or in Obsidian.
  • A reminder to keep a copy of your Speechify key when you save it, with the choice to keep it in your folder too.

In the queue

  • Link every person and place in the Fact Book to its entry in the free Logos Fact Book.
  • Old Testament background for the Ancient panel, the ancient Near East behind the text. Today the panel covers the New Testament only.
  • Integrate AI into the app.
  • More books, such as the Apocrypha.
  • A complete search of the Bible and the other books in the app.
  • The visual tools from jayms.com, such as Word Trail, and the timelines, built into the app.
  • An ebook section.
  • Voice reading for more of the app. Today it reads Bible passages only.
  • A nine-week reading plan, What It Means to Be a Man, with Stoic readings from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus next to the Scripture readings, and a Stoics side button.
  • English Targum for the Psalms and the rest of the Writings, once a translation is found.
  • Saving to a folder on a phone. Phones cannot choose a folder yet, so the plan there is the backup file, and reading the same notes through Files or the Obsidian app.
  • Moving the test features to the live app, with an updated user guide.
