John 19:1-16, Flogged, mocked, and no friend of Caesar
Pilate has Jesus flogged, the soldiers crown him with thorns and hail him as king, and Pilate shows him to the crowd. Warned that releasing him makes Pilate no friend of Caesar, he sits on the judgment seat at the Stone Pavement and hands him over.
John 19:1-16, in every translation this tool compares.
Pilate has Jesus beaten and mocked as a king, then presents him to the crowd, hoping that will be enough. The priests demand crucifixion and say Jesus has claimed to be God's Son, which alarms Pilate further. When they warn that releasing him would make Pilate disloyal to Caesar, and declare Caesar their only king, Pilate gives way and hands him over.

Whether this is the full scourging before execution is read differently: Keener calls it a lesser beating, since Pilate had not yet passed sentence, the ESV Study Bible the lightest Roman form, and the CSB Study Bible says it left Jesus too weak to carry the beam far. A faded red soldier's cloak could pass for purple, and Hail mimics the salute Ave, Caesar (Keener and his notes; the CSB Study Bible). Here is the man is heard in several ways: Keener reads a mock acclamation that presents a harmless fool, the ESV and CSB Study Bibles a cry of look at the poor fellow, the cultural backgrounds notes an echo of God presenting Saul in 1 Samuel 9:17, and Wright the true image of the true God. Jews prayed daily for the royal Messiah, and a prayer later used at Passover confesses no king but God, so the leaders' cry is bitter irony (Keener and his notes). Gabbatha was probably a platform on the east side of Herod's palace, since the pavement long taken as the Antonia's was not laid before AD 70 (the Zondervan Bible dictionary).
