John 19:16-30, The cross, the notice in three languages, and his mother
Jesus carries his own cross to Golgotha. Pilate's notice, King of the Jews, is written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek; soldiers cast lots for his seamless tunic; he gives his mother to the beloved disciple, takes the sour wine and says it is finished.
John 19:16-30, in every translation this tool compares.
Jesus carries his own cross to Golgotha and is crucified between two others. Pilate's notice names him king of the Jews in three languages, and Pilate refuses to alter it, while the soldiers gamble for his seamless tunic. From the cross Jesus entrusts his mother to the disciple he loved, and he dies declaring his work complete.

The condemned carried the crossbeam to the site, and Roman crucifixions, like Jewish stonings, took place outside the city (Keener and his notes); the cultural backgrounds notes say the soldiers would have led Jesus out through the Garden Gate, not along the route later tradition enshrined. Execution squads, typically four men, had a right to what the prisoner wore, and a seamless tunic was specially made and valuable (Keener and his notes). Keener notes that Josephus calls the high priest's robe seamless but thinks a priestly allusion probably reads too much into the text; the CSB Study Bible suggests Joseph's robe instead. Jesus' mother was probably a widow in her forties who depended on her eldest son (Keener and his notes). Sour wine was the cheap drink of soldiers and laborers, and hyssop was used at Passover (Exodus 12:22) (Keener and his notes). Where Golgotha was is disputed: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has the stronger historical claim, with a tradition going back to the fourth century, while the Garden Tomb rests on a nineteenth-century identification (the Zondervan Bible dictionary; the Zondervan atlas).
