Revelation 7:1-17, the sealing of the 144,000 and the crowd in white

Four angels hold back the winds until God's servants are sealed on their foreheads, 144,000 from the tribes of Israel. Then John sees a crowd no one can count, from every nation, in white robes with palm branches, who have come out of the great tribulation and whom the Lamb will shepherd.

What is going on here

The storm of judgment is held back until God marks his servants as his own, and John hears their number, 144,000, counted tribe by tribe from Israel. When he looks, he sees instead a vast, uncountable crowd from all over the world, dressed in white and celebrating God's rescue. An elder explains that they have come through great suffering and that the Lamb will now shelter, feed and guide them, ending their pain. Who the 144,000 are, whether they are the same people as the crowd, and why the tribe of Dan is missing are all debated.

Also in this passage

God's servants are marked as his, like sealed goods; the mark is the taw of Ezekiel 9:4-6, set on the righteous before judgment (Keener; the cultural backgrounds notes; Heiser), and Heiser adds that the seal is God's name, mirroring the beast's mark. The list resembles a military census (the cultural backgrounds notes; the CSB Study Bible). Why Dan is missing is read differently: a warning about apostasy (Keener); unexplained, since Jewish sources criticize every tribe (the cultural backgrounds notes); and for Heiser, who will not dismiss the patristic Antichrist from Dan, perhaps suspicion of Gentile mixing in the tribe, which he calls probably unanswerable. The 144,000 are the whole people of God or a remnant of ethnic Israel, which "remains debated" (Keener); the whole redeemed community (Beale; Wright); symbolic (the ESV Study Bible); a future converted Israel (the CSB Study Bible). Heiser, in his Revelation 7 and question-and-answer episodes alike, reads Jews who follow the Lamb, distinct from the crowd. The great tribulation is a definite future period (the Zondervan dictionary) or perhaps the whole era between Jesus' comings (the cultural backgrounds article Time in Revelation). Palm branches belonged to Tabernacles (Keener) and came to mean victory (the dictionary).
