Exodus 7:1

Exodus 7:1, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

Spokesman. That is the job. Whether the message concerns the future is incidental to what the role is.

Why this verse

Because prophecy in English means prediction, and the Hebrew office is about being someone's mouth, which Exodus 7:1 states outright.

How the others read it

Every version reads prophet.

The word

נָבִיא navi · H5030

What you are seeing

Navi is one who speaks for another. Exodus 7:1 makes Aaron the navi of Moses, which defines the term inside the text: Moses is as God and Aaron is his mouth. Prediction is a possible content, not the definition.

Why translators split

English prophecy has narrowed almost entirely to foretelling, so forthtelling has to be explained.

The rule to carry away

When the Bible defines a term inside the narrative, that definition outranks any lexicon. Exodus 7:1 is the definition of this one.

Choosing between them

Prophet is universal.
