1 Corinthians 15:21

1 Corinthians 15:21, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

He got back on his feet. English uses standing for recovery all the time. The Greek noun is that, made literal.

Why this verse

Because English resurrection is a technical religious term with no picture in it, and the Greek noun is physical and ordinary enough to be used of standing up.

How the others read it

Every version reads resurrection or rising.

The word

ἀνάστασις anastasis · G386

What you are seeing

Ana, up or again, plus histemi, to stand. The word is concrete, which is part of why the Athenians at Acts 17 reacted to it as they did: it was not a metaphor for survival.

Why translators split

English borrowed a Latin word, resurrectio, so the English term is opaque where the Greek was transparent.

The rule to carry away

Words borrowed from Latin into English usually lose the picture the Greek had. Taking the Greek compound apart restores it.

Choosing between them

Resurrection is universal in English versions.
