Echoes of Revelation
Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.
Revelation 13:14-15, worship the image or die
The order to make an image of the beast and kill all who will not worship it replays Nebuchadnezzar's golden statue in Daniel 3.
Revelation 13:14-15, in every translation this tool compares.
A loyalty test where one side gets a job and the other a prison cell is old news. In Daniel 3 King Nebuchadnezzar sets up a gold image and commands every people to bow to it or be thrown into the furnace. Daniel's three friends refuse. John's second beast orders an image of the first beast, gives it breath and has those who will not worship it killed. The old test returns in John's vision.
An image set up by a ruler, a command to all peoples to worship it, and death for those who refuse. John's proskynesosin te eikoni, worship the image, matches the Greek of Daniel 3:5.
Nebuchadnezzar's image is gold and silent; John's image is given breath and speaks. Daniel's friends are rescued from the fire, but the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible notes that John warns many faithful will die. The ruler is not a Babylonian king but the beast, served by a false prophet.
John replays Daniel 3: an image, a command to worship it, and death for those who refuse. Beale says believers should persevere as Daniel's friends did, trusting that God will deliver them through death. Their reward is rescue from eternal fire.
Not Daniel 3 told again unchanged. Nebuchadnezzar's statue is silent gold. John's image breathes and speaks, and a false prophet orders it, not a king.
Beale says the beast killing those who will not worship the image comes from the king's order in Daniel 3, and that 13:16 echoes the groups summoned in Daniel 3:2-7. He notes 1 and 2 Maccabees also drew on Daniel 3, and that the image was later called a great dragon in a midrash. He cites Price on the colossal statue at Ephesus and Friesen's correction that it honored Titus. He also allows that the image's sixty cubits by six may lie behind 666. Keener, the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, the ESV Study Bible and the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible all point to Daniel 3; the CSB Study Bible cross-references Daniel 3:5-6. Beale calls it a clear allusion.
Beale reads the image as anything put in God's place, in any age, and sees the pressure to honor the emperor's image in John's day. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible dates a huge imperial statue at Ephesus to Domitian; Beale reports Friesen's view that the colossus honored Titus. MacArthur reads a future image of the Antichrist, tied to the throne he sets up in the Jerusalem temple at the abomination of desolation, halfway through the tribulation. Keener adds the Maccabean martyrs as a parallel. The sources agree on Daniel 3.
