Echoes of Revelation
Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.
Revelation 13:18, the number 666
The only places 666 appears in the Old Testament are Solomon's yearly gold and a family list; Beale thinks Solomon's gold may be in view, and Heiser finds that unpersuasive.
Revelation 13:18, in every translation this tool compares.
A number on a jersey can mean nothing, or it can honor a famous player, and fans argue about it for years. First Kings 10 says Solomon received 666 talents of gold a year, just before it tells how his wealth and wives led him astray. Beale thinks that number may be in John's mind. Heiser rejects it. Nobody, he says, knows what the number means.
The number six hundred sixty-six, and in the setting of a king's power and wealth.
Solomon's number counts gold; John's counts a name, the number of a man. First Kings does not call the gold evil. John gives no sign that he is pointing to Solomon. The link rests on what follows in 1 Kings: Solomon breaking the law for kings.
If Solomon's gold is in view, Beale says, the number marks kingship twisted by idolatry and greed. He also reads triple six as falling short of seven, the beast's failure to be what it claims. Wisdom means seeing through the beast.
Not a solved code. Heiser stresses there is no secure Old Testament source for the number, and the sources list many readings without agreement.
Beale says the mention of 666 talents in 1 Kings 10:14 may be in John's field of reference, since it comes at Solomon's peak and right before his breaking of Deuteronomy 17's rules for kings. He also cites Daniel 3:1, the image sixty cubits high and six wide, as a possible echo, after Irenaeus. He prefers a symbolic reading: six falling short of seven, three times over. Heiser reports Strawn and Bodner's 2020 article tying 666 to Solomon's gold. The other sources give gematria: Keener and the ESV Study Bible note Nero Caesar in Hebrew letters adds to 666. The grade is drawn here as possible: two sources propose the text, and one of them rejects it.
Heiser says there is no secure Old Testament contribution to the number. He calls the Solomon proposal very weak, since Second Temple writers saw Solomon as a wise exorcist, the opposite of an antichrist. He doubts Nero too, because Irenaeus knew Nero yet ignored that solution, and to him spelling tricks feel "like cheating". He leans toward a link with Babel, via Irenaeus' Teitan, but admits nobody knows.
Beale thinks Solomon's gold and Daniel's image may both stand behind the number. Heiser rejects Solomon. Keener and the ESV Study Bible give the Nero Caesar reading; Heiser notes it can also explain the variant 616, but he and Beale doubt it. The CSB Study Bible gives both gematria and the symbolic six. MacArthur reads 666 as the number of a man, six falling short of seven. He expects the Antichrist, once revealed, to be linked to it, perhaps by the value of his name, and warns against guessing beyond the text.
