Echoes of Revelation

Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.

Revelation 19:17-18, the great supper of God

The angel's call to the birds to eat the flesh of kings, horses and warriors is Ezekiel 39's summons to the birds after the defeat of Gog.

Revelation 19:17-18; Revelation 19:21

Revelation 19:17-18; Revelation 19:21, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

A second invitation printed in the same type as the first, but for a very different event, is meant to make readers shudder. In Ezekiel 39, after Gog's army falls, God tells the birds and beasts to gather and feast on fallen warriors and the blood of princes. John's angel calls the birds to the great supper of God. They will eat kings, captains, horses and riders. John gives Gog's end to the beast's army.

What matches

The summons to every bird to gather (synachthete in both Greek texts) and eat the flesh of the fallen. The list of the dead: kings or princes, mighty men, horses and their riders. Ezekiel 39:20 says they will be filled at God's table; John says the birds were filled (echortasthesan) with their flesh.

Why it doesn't match exactly

Ezekiel calls birds and beasts; John calls only birds, flying in midheaven like the eagle of 8:13. Ezekiel calls it God's sacrifice; John calls it the great supper of God. John adds free and slave, small and great. Ezekiel's enemy is Gog; John's is the beast, the false prophet and their armies.

What John does with it

Beale says the angel updates Ezekiel. The prophecy still waited, and now Christ is the one who wins and the beast is Gog. In Ezekiel the defeat makes God's holy name known to Israel and the nations. The same theme of the name runs through 19:11-16.

What this echo is not

Not the marriage supper of verse 9. The two meals are opposites. Beale calls this one a macabre parody of the wedding feast.

Go deeper

Beale sets Ezekiel 39:4 and 17-20 beside 19:17-18 and says the angel announces the beast's defeat with the same imagery as Gog's. The vault's Septuagint of Ezekiel 39:17 has eipon panti orneo … synachthete kai erchesthe, speak to every bird … gather and come; 39:20 has you shall be filled at my table with horse and rider. Beale adds that Jewish readers applied the passage to Rome, and one midrash paired it with the wedding of the righteous. Keener, the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, the ESV Study Bible and the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible all name Ezekiel 39:17-20; the ESV Study Bible adds the covenant curse of Deuteronomy 28:26. Walton notes that lying unburied for birds was the worst curse imaginable in the ancient world. The grade is drawn here: the summons, the guest list and the meal could hardly come from anywhere else.

Heiser's reading

Heiser, following Meredith Kline, says there is only one Old Testament passage where birds and beasts are summoned to feed on the dead at the cosmic mountain: Ezekiel 39, Gog and Magog. Kline also lists the earthquake, sword, hail and burning sulfur of Ezekiel 38:19-22. So chapters 16, 19 and 20 all retell the one Gog battle. Heiser calls this repetition, not a line of separate events. He also links the birds to Psalm 74:14, where animals eat Leviathan, chaos consumed.

Where the sources disagree

The sources agree on Ezekiel 39. They differ on what it means for the order of events. Beale, after Kline, and Heiser hold that 19:17-21 and 20:7-10 tell the same battle. Others Beale names see two battles, or treat Gog as a broad label for God's enemies. MacArthur sees two: this is the battle of Armageddon at the close of the tribulation, and the Gog and Magog revolt of 20:8 comes a thousand years later.
