Echoes of Revelation

Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.

Revelation 20:8, as the sand of the sea

The countless army, like sand on the shore, uses the picture the Old Testament gives the hordes that came against Israel in Joshua, Judges and Samuel.

Revelation 20:8

Revelation 20:8, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

Calling a crowd a sea of faces borrows a picture everyone has heard before. When the kings of Canaan, the Midianites and the Philistines came against Israel, the writers said their numbers were like sand on the seashore. John uses the same picture for the nations Satan gathers. The odds look hopeless for God's people, as they did in those old battles.

What matches

The comparison of an enemy army to sand by the sea. The Greek of Judges 7:12 has hosper he ammos he epi to cheilos tes thalasses; John has hos he ammos tes thalasses.

Why it doesn't match exactly

In the old stories the army is one nation or a league of kings in Canaan. In John it is the nations of the whole earth. John keeps only the comparison and drops the shore and the camels. The sources give no reason for the wording beyond the common picture.

What John does with it

The old battles ended with Israel rescued against huge odds. John's version ends the same way, only faster: fire from heaven ends it before a blow is struck.

What this echo is not

Not the promise to Abraham. Genesis 22:17 uses the same picture for his children. But Beale and a study Bible point to the armies that came against Israel.

Go deeper

Beale notes that Joshua 11:4, Judges 7:12 and 1 Samuel 13:5 use the same metaphor for the nations arrayed against Israel, and that the Greek of Joshua 11:4-5 and 1 Samuel 13:5 also has gathering to war and encamping. He suggests these early attacks may have shaped Ezekiel 38-39 and could well belong to the background of Revelation 20:8-9, working by analogy. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible calls it a common hyperbole for a countless multitude, citing Genesis 22:17, Judges 7:12 and 1 Samuel 13:5. The ESV Study Bible compares 12:17, where the dragon stands on the sand of the sea. The grade is possible: the picture is common, and two sources name these texts.

Where the sources disagree

Beale reads the comparison as a deliberate link to Israel's old enemies. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible treats it as a stock phrase. The CSB Study Bible's cross-references list instead the promise texts about Abraham's descendants and Israel's numbers (Genesis 32:12; Hosea 1:10), which would make it an ironic reversal; no source draws that out.
